CELEBRATION OF 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE COMMUNITY HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME (CHIS) IN RUMUOKWURUSHI PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE
HELD ON 13TH MARCH
ABOUT RUMUOKWURUSHI MODEL PRIMAY HEALTH CENTRE (RMPHC)
The health centre was built by the Rivers State Government in 2011 under the governorship of Rt. Hon. Chibuike R. Amaechi, located at Manyariagbo Roundabout Rumuokwurushi along Igwuruta Road, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Port Harcourt, Ward 3 Rivers State, which Eze Chorlu Vii, Eze (Sir) Engr. B. A. Worgu (JP) and the Paramount Rule of Rumuchorlu and his counsel of Chiefs, Elders and Elites contributed immensely in ensuring that the sitting of the project in Rumuokwurusi (Rumuchorlu) becomes a reality.
In 2013, the Community Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS) as introduced with the support of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and other partners.
ESSENCE OF CELEBRATION:
The Community Health Insurance Scheme in Rumuokwurushi Model Primary Health Centre marked its one (1) year of existence. Addresses were made by Shell Regional Community Health Manager, other SPDC representatives, Medical Director of the Rumuokwurushi Model Primary Health Centre and a representative from the Health Management Organizations (HMO(s)
In their speech, vision of the project was mentioned, which is “To provide unequalled world class Primary Health Care Services geared towards meeting the physical, mental and social well being of the population within the community” and Mission which is “To grow from primary service giver to a robust health facility where professional health care needs are provided”. As a result the Shell Petroleum Development Company upgraded the facility from a Health Centre to a Cottage Hospital by adding to the work force and providing more facilities to meet the medical challenges of people in Rumukwurusi, haven seen the success made in Obio Cottage Hospital decided to replicate it in Rumuokwurusi Model Primary Health Centre for a wider coverage. There were drama presentation by the Health Care Workers and free medical care for the masses.
SUCCESS STORY:
At the arrival of this project in Rumuokwurushi only few pregnant women were found patronising the Primary Health Care but within the 1 year ( One Year) of its existence there has been rapid increase in terms of pregnant women registering for the scheme who also testified of the quality service they’ve received.

HIGHLIGHT OF HIS SPEECH

Correction of spelling ‘Rumuokwurushie to Rumuokwurusi’; He advised and urged people to know the right spelling of Rumuokwurusi.

He appreciated SPDC for locating Rumuokwurushi Model Primary Health Centre as beneficiary of the Scheme, however sited some shortcomings of SPDC and advised them to carry the various communities of Rumuokwurusi along including Rumuchorlu the host community and admonish SPDC to engage proper process of involving the community from planning process to implementation of project for effective community participation and ownership which is prerequisite for a successful and sustainability of projects at grass root level.
